Grids and Time Zones

Hey Blog!

Today we talked about different things on a map. A map is a two- dimensional or flat scale model of the Earth's surface. The art of map making is called cartography. There are two reasons why geographers use maps. One is to see where people and activities are located and the other is to see why they are found there. We also learned about latitude and longitude. They are used as a reference tool to identify an objects absolute and relative location. They are also used as a communication tool to convey the distribution of human activities or physical features. Absolute locations the position as expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds of latitude and longitude. Relative location is the regional position or situation of a place relative to the position of other places.

Latitude facts:
- They are known as parallels
- They run in east- west direction
- They measure distance north or south of the Equator
- They get shorter toward the poles
-They never meet

Site and Situation

Whats up blog ;)

Today we talked more about site, but we also started learning about situation. These two things help geographers describe where things are. Situation is the location of a place relative to others places. This helps us do two things. Number one is it helps us to find an unfamiliar place by comparing is location with a familiar one. It also helps us understand the importance of a location. Some places are important because they are accessible to other places due to their location. You would also use situation to identify important buildings, streets, and other land marks to direct people to a desired location. If someone asks me where Bel Air is I would say its north of Baltimore. There are also places that are more important because of their location. Such as Chicago, it has become a big city because it is close to a major water source, Lake Michigan.

How do geographers describe where things are?

HEY BLOG!

Today we talked about the different ways that geographers are able to describe where things are located on Earth. Geographers can describe the location of a place by site. Site is the physical characteristics of a place. Some important characteristics are climate, water sources, topography, soil, vegetation, and elevation. These factors are important when choosing land to live on. The factors that the land has to have depends on what the land is going to be used for. The land can also be modified by humans for their on purposes. This modification has been seen in Manhattan, New York. More land was created by filling parts of the Hudson River and also by sinking old ship and piling stuff on top of them to bring it up to above sea level, where they could build on it. Many places are also being used very efficiently by building in a small space, but putting a few very tall buildings there instead of multiple normal buildings.

Maps

Hi blog!

Mercator Map:

  • Was made in 1569
  • Created by Gerardus Mercator
  • It was mainly used for sailors and other sea farers
  • Its preferred by navigators because the ship can sail in a constant direction to reach its destination, eliminating difficult and error-prone course corrections.
  • It is not accurate because it doesn't show the correct size of places
  • Linear scale is constant on the Mercator in every direction around any point
    • Greenland appears the same size as Africa, when in reality Africa's area is 14x greater.
    • Africa also appears to be roughly the same size as South America, when in reality Africa is more than 1.5x as large.
    • Russia appears to be 4x the size of the United States, but is really only about twice the size; comparable to the size of South America.
Peter's Map:
  • A rectangular map projection that maps all areas such that they have the correct sizes relative to each other.
  • The projection is named after James Gall and Arno Peters
  • Was made in 1985
  • It is more accurate than the Mercator Map

9/18/19 Blog

Whatssssss upppp bloggggg!

Today we talked more about maps. We re-watched the video from yesterday to learn more about the Peter's World map. We also did a thing where when someone wanted to say something during the video they would say "okay stop". This allowed people to make comments about the video that made new conversations start. I liked doing this in class. One debate that we had was about whether or not the upside down map was good. I personally don't think that the upside down map is good. It is just confusing and I don't think it is very realistic. Also I don't think the world had a top and bottom attitude, so turning upside down isn't really necessary.

I did very well on the test that we got back today. I didn't think it was that difficult, but maybe just because I studied. If this is how the quizzes and tests will be the rest of the year I think I will do pretty good.

9/17/19 Blog

Hey Blog :)

Today we started studying different types of maps. Turns out that the map that I have been using my entire life is actually not accurate at all. When we looked at the Peter's World Map I thought it was totally wrong, but it is more accurate than the Mercator Map. On the Mercator Map, Africa is smaller than what it really is, and Greenland is too big. This was very shocking to me. I also learned that there are many different kinds of maps. Some of them look very strange, but each of them has a specific purpose. The most accurate way of looking at the Earth is a globe. It shows that correct size of things and the correct latitude and longitude. The distance around the world at the Equator and at the North Pole are very different, but a map shows them like they are the same. This is one of the biggest flaws with flat maps. The video that we watched was funny, but also very interesting. Today's class was fun.

9/13/19 Blog

HEY BLOG!

I just finished the test. Overall it was pretty easy and knew basically all the answers. I really glad that I woke up last night and studied. I got home late from a soccer game and I was really tired so I just went to sleep, and I didn't think I needed to study. Then I got a call and it woke me up, and I forced myself to stay up and study for this test and my bible test. I didn't want to but if I hadn't stayed up I wouldn't have known most of the answers on this test. This unit was interesting and I liked learning about Socrates and Ancient Greece.

The last essay part was the most challenging question. It was a little difficult to come up with what I would say to convince the other jury members to not "not guilty". In the end I think I came up with good reasons why they should. Even though this question made me think more, I still think I did pretty good on it. This test was fair and now I did this blog so I don't have homework over the weekend!

9/12/19 Blog

Whats up blog!

We have a test tomorrow. Today we learned about Socrates. He was a Greek philosopher that had many new ideas about life. He was a normal person and he worked as a stone mason before he became a teacher. This helped him later on because he had a better view of the real world not the wealthy side of it. When he was a teacher he taught the youth, probably teenagers and a little older. He taught them right outside the town. Socrates used a method of teaching where he asked questions and his students answered and gave their opinion. This led to the scientific method. Socrates later got accused of corrupting the youth and not following the gods recognized by the state. He was found guilty by a jury of 500 men. He was sentenced to death. Socrates drank poison hemlock and died. Even though he was killed his ideas about life are still in use today.

9/9/19 Blog

Hey Blog!

We have a test on Friday :( But that's okay because I think that the material is mostly easy. Today in class we continued the excellence power point. We learned what some of the words from A Message to Garcia meant, and also an Ancient Greek word called Areté. This word means excellence. We also talked about philosophy and what it means. It was kinda weird to think about thinking, and I don't understand how the brain works. We also talked about how humans are the only species that is self aware and can understand complex ideas. The last thing we talked about was initiative. We looked at a quote by Elbert Hubbard, and what it meant. Todays class was interesting.

9/6/19 Blog

Heyyyyyy blog!!!!

Human geo was very interesting today! We finished reading A Message to Garcia, by Elbert Hubbard. The story was kinda confusing because it was written in 1899, and a lot of the phrases were different than the ones that are used currently. Mr. Schick explained what they meant so it made more sense. I also realized that I don't hate reading to the class. Overall the story had a very important message. The takeaway was that we need more people who will work hard, even when the "boss" isn't looking. If everyone worked hard not just for themselves, but for others the world would be a better place. I will apply this to school. I will work hard in my classes, and try my best to succeed. Even when the teacher isn't looking I will still do what I am supposed to. I really enjoyed the story and it was a good way to start the year. It gave me something to try to achieve through out high school, and in life.

9/5/19 Blog

Whats up blog!?

Today was pretty good. I'm starting to get used to being in a new school, and I really like it so far. In human geography we talked about why high school is very difficult. It made me nervous, but I think I will be okay, once I get used to balancing the work load and soccer. I just need to get better at time management, because sometimes I get distracted when I'm doing homework. Overall I think the class discussion was very helpful, and I also like the passage we started reading. Even though we didn't read a lot of it, it seems very interesting. I also think that taking notes while we read is good so u don't have to re-read something you can just look at the notes. It made me focus on what we were actually doing instead of zoning out. I'm excited to see what else we do in human geo!

First Day of School

1) The best part of my first day was my off mod. I was lucky enough to know a lot of people. I also made many new friends during my off mod. It was good to have some free time during the day to de-stress. I had time to figure out where my other classes were and hang out with friends. My least favorite part of the day was intro to bible. It was very cold in the room and it was kinda boring and I was tired. Even though it was boring the first day I think it will get more interesting when we actually start learning stuff. Overall my first day was pretty good and I think all my classes will be interesting and fun.

2) I like where I'm sitting in class, because I'm sitting next to my friend Maddie. I fine with being in the front row, even though I normally sit in the back, but as long as I'm near a friend I'm good.
