9/17/19 Blog

Hey Blog :)

Today we started studying different types of maps. Turns out that the map that I have been using my entire life is actually not accurate at all. When we looked at the Peter's World Map I thought it was totally wrong, but it is more accurate than the Mercator Map. On the Mercator Map, Africa is smaller than what it really is, and Greenland is too big. This was very shocking to me. I also learned that there are many different kinds of maps. Some of them look very strange, but each of them has a specific purpose. The most accurate way of looking at the Earth is a globe. It shows that correct size of things and the correct latitude and longitude. The distance around the world at the Equator and at the North Pole are very different, but a map shows them like they are the same. This is one of the biggest flaws with flat maps. The video that we watched was funny, but also very interesting. Today's class was fun.
